In industries where flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust are present, using standard electrical equipment is not just a safety violation — it is a potential catastrophe. Explosion-proof steam cleaners are specifically designed and certified for use in these hazardous environments. This guide explains the certification standards, zone classifications, and selection criteria.
Understanding ATEX Certification
ATEX (ATmospheres EXplosibles) is the European Union directive for explosion-proof equipment. Directive 2014/34/EU classifies equipment into groups and categories based on the intended use environment.
| Equipment Group | Category | Zone | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group I (Mining) | M1 / M2 | - | Underground mining with methane/coal dust |
| Group II (Surface) | 1 | Zone 1 | Continuous explosive atmosphere |
| Group II (Surface) | 2 | Zone 1 | Likely explosive atmosphere |
| Group II (Surface) | 3 | Zone 2 | Unlikely/short-duration explosive atmosphere |
For most industrial applications (chemical plants, refineries, paint shops, grain handling), Category 2 (Zone 1) or Category 3 (Zone 2) equipment is required.
Understanding EAC Certification
EAC (Eurasian Conformity) is the certification required for the Eurasian Customs Union, which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. Technical Regulation TR CU 012/2011 covers equipment for use in explosive atmospheres.
EAC certification follows similar principles to ATEX but is legally required for the Eurasian Customs Union market. Equipment with only ATEX certification cannot legally be sold or used in Russia or other member states without EAC certification.
Hazardous Zone Classifications
Zone 0 / Zone 20
Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods. Steam cleaning equipment is generally not suitable for Zone 0 due to the electrical components required.
Zone 1 / Zone 21
Explosive atmosphere likely to occur in normal operation. Requires Category 2 equipment with enhanced protection. This is the most common zone for chemical and petrochemical facilities.
Zone 2 / Zone 22
Explosive atmosphere not likely to occur, and if it does, only for short periods. Requires Category 3 equipment with basic protection. Includes areas adjacent to Zone 1 and occasional-release areas.
Key Design Features of Explosion-Proof Steam Cleaners
- Flameproof motor (Ex d): Enclosure designed to contain internal explosions without igniting external atmosphere
- Intrinsically safe circuits (Ex i): Electrical energy limited to prevent spark ignition
- Sealed switches and sensors: No sparking contacts exposed to atmosphere
- Grounded construction: Static electricity dissipated through grounding
- Non-sparking materials: External parts made of materials that do not produce sparks on impact
- Temperature class marking: Maximum surface temperature classified to prevent auto-ignition
Selecting the Right Explosion-Proof Steam Cleaner
1. Determine Your Zone Classification
Have a qualified safety engineer classify your facility into zones. This determines the minimum equipment category required.
2. Identify Gas Groups
Different gases have different ignition energies. Common gas groups:
| Group | Typical Gas | Ignition Energy |
|---|---|---|
| IIA | Propane, butane, gasoline | Higher energy required |
| IIB | Ethylene, town gas | Medium energy |
| IIC | Hydrogen, acetylene | Very low energy |
3. Check Temperature Class
Equipment surface temperature must not exceed the auto-ignition temperature of the gas/vapor present:
| Temperature Class | Max Surface Temp | Example Gas |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 450°C | Hydrogen, methane |
| T2 | 300°C | Acetylene, ethylene |
| T3 | 200°C | Gasoline, propane |
| T4 | 135°C | Diethyl ether |
Steam cleaners with steam at 170-220°C must be T2 or lower. Most explosion-proof industrial steam cleaners are rated T3 or T4 for broader compatibility.
4. Verify Both ATEX and EAC
If you export to both EU and CIS markets, ensure the equipment has both ATEX and EAC certifications. Dual certification eliminates the need for separate equipment for different markets.
Common Applications
- Chemical plants: Equipment cleaning in production areas with solvent vapors
- Oil and gas: Platform and refinery equipment cleaning
- Paint shops: Overspray removal in paint booths with flammable vapors
- Grain handling: Dust explosion hazard areas
- Pharmaceutical: Solvent-based production areas
- Mining: Above-ground processing facilities with methane
Compliance Checklist
- Verify the zone classification of your facility
- Confirm the equipment category matches or exceeds the zone requirement
- Check gas group compatibility
- Verify temperature class is appropriate for your atmosphere
- Ensure both ATEX and EAC certifications are current
- Request the full certification documentation (not just markings)
- Train operators on explosion-proof equipment procedures
- Schedule regular inspection by certified personnel
